By Dave Scott As a child you always wonder… wouldn’t it be cool to fly… wouldn’t it be cool to visit the moon… we dream about possibilities… our minds are clear… and we as kids, believe we can do anything. As we grow up, our dreams start to slip away… and things like paying the mortgage take over… the adult in us prevails… but what if I told you that last week, I felt like a kid again… just for a little bit… you know… it felt good… it felt right! I was out at Long Point Eco-Adventure doing the 24 hour Zip-Raiser for the NYCA. Night had fallen… and the sky was clear… stars were shining as if they themselves were celebrating the cool spring evening. As I watched our guide zip to the first platform, disappearing into the night… I felt that child’s excitement re-enter my soul… that eight year old boy was giddy with excitement… a little cautious… but wide-eyed at zipping into the unknown... the night. Another zipper takes some glow sticks and attaches them to their helmet… appearing like an oversized firefly looking for a place to land. I laugh to myself at the silliness taking place around me… we are basically jumping into the dark, hooting and hollering as we go. I find myself taking in the moment… reflecting back to the eight year old in me… saying this is too cool! Off I go into the night enjoying the zips… finally when I look up towards the sky as I zip, I realize the beauty of the stars above me… the sky is immersed with them on this night… and I feel like for that brief moment I am among them… WOW, FLOAT’N with the stars. I reach the last zip… the longest one and I prepare myself… I want the eight year old in me to visit one more time… let the kid out… this time I want to take it all in… the stars, the darkness below… the faint outline of the lake beyond the marsh… I want to hurry up and wait all at the same time… I leave the last platform, darkness surrounds me, the only sounds is that of the zip… the quiet beauty above greets me… I stop thinking… I relax… Let the eight year old take over ……I spin around looking back at the sky…. I know there is a big grin on my face for the next 20 seconds. I land softly on the last platform… someone speaks… reality returns… the eight year old in me laughs and says, ‘See I told you, you could fly!’ Zip RAISER Soars By Dave Scott The annual NYCA fundraiser soared again out at Long Point Eco-Adventure this year. Of course the sun was shining for the majority of the time with just a little rain on day two… and when you are zipping for 24 hours you just hope the weather cooperates. Thursday at noon, twenty-two folks left from the first zip to start what would be a unique experience in the trees. All but one of the usual suspects was back from last year and it did not take long for the friendships to be rekindled. It seemed like the laughter picked up right where it left off. Steve and Adam and their staff took excellent care of the zippers and made the tree time tops. As for the newbie’s this year, they fit right in joining in the fun along the way. This year’s event had the addition of a quiz and a game, which involved each team carrying an open cup of water around as they zipped… there were some very inventive ways… to keep from spilling the water. As night descended the zip experience took on a whole new dimension, sliding through the dark into the unknown… was exciting and at the same time relaxing… looking back while you zipped in the clear night with all those stars overhead was an experience I soon won’t forget (go try the night zip). The 24 hours went by fast and it was not long until daylight was upon us… and we entered into the last six hours of the Zip-Raiser… blurry eyed, we continued on… each zip was a new adventure… all the time the guides keeping us safe! Finally one more climb up the long stairs after the last repel… and our 24 hours was over. Some folks did ten, even eleven runs of the course… all of us were a little sore, but when the money total came in and close to $19,000 was raised we all felt great. I cannot thank everyone enough… and well actually, we will have a big list next week thanking everyone… as for now, I need to catch up on my sleep!
